What the NAIC numbers mean, and what they do not

Average expenditure is total written premium for liability, collision and comprehensive divided by liability written car-years. It is not a quote. Drivers who carry only liability pay less, and drivers with full coverage on newer cars often pay more.

The NAIC cautions that state results reflect different laws, traffic conditions, coverage choices and demographics, so direct state comparisons need care. Its data also lags, so 2024 is the latest year available. Prices for 2026 policies are likely different.

For your own policy, the useful comparison is your premium against current quotes for the same coverage.
