What it means for drivers and insurance

NHTSA counts a crash as alcohol-impaired when a driver or rider had a BAC of .08 or higher, and it estimates BAC when tests are missing. Being hit by an impaired driver does not change who pays: their liability insurance is first in line. If they have little or no insurance, your uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage can help.

A DUI conviction usually raises premiums sharply and can require an SR-22 filing.

FAQ

How many people die from drunk driving each year?

11,904 in 2024, the latest year of federal data. That is 30% of all U.S. traffic deaths.

Where does the 13,524 figure come from?

It is NHTSA's count for 2022, published in the Alcohol-Impaired Driving: 2022 Data fact sheet. It has since been replaced by 2023 and 2024 data.

Which state has the most drunk driving deaths?

Texas, with 1,676 alcohol-impaired-driving deaths in 2024. Texas was also the only state with no change from 2023.

Which state has the highest share of drunk driving deaths?

Vermont, where 41% of 2024 traffic deaths were in alcohol-impaired-driving crashes. Vermont's numbers are small (24 deaths), so the share can swing a lot year to year.

Why are Texas state figures lower than NHTSA's?

TxDOT counted 1,053 deaths in 2024 (and 906 in 2025) where a driver was under the influence of alcohol. NHTSA uses the .08 BAC rule and estimates missing test results, so its count is higher.

Does this include drivers who were drugged, not drunk?

No. These figures cover alcohol only. NHTSA does not include other drugs in the alcohol-impaired count.

Are there 2025 drunk driving numbers?

Not yet at the national level. NHTSA's early estimate for 2025 covers total deaths only (36,640). 2024 is the latest year for alcohol-impaired-driving deaths. The 2024 figures come from the FARS 2024 annual report file and may change slightly when NHTSA revises it.
