Does My Car Insurance Cover a Rental Car I Booked?
Short answer: Sometimes your own auto policy covers a rental car you book, but you should not assume that. The Texas Department of Insurance says to call your agent and ask what the policy covers when you drive a rental; policies differ, and some cover damage to the rental from a wreck or theft. The North Carolina Department of Insurance says that under certain conditions a personal auto policy may cover a rental vehicle, and that you should ask your agent for the specifics. That question is separate from rental reimbursement, which TDI says pays for a substitute car if your own insured car is stolen or being repaired after a covered accident. Get the answer in writing before you decline the rental company's product. State rules vary.
Key takeaways
- A policy may extend to a traditional rental, but you have to ask
- Rental reimbursement pays for a loaner after your car is laid up, not the same thing as covering a car you rented for a trip
- Peer-to-peer platforms may be treated differently than a counter rental
- One company's advice to one customer is not a rule for every policy
- Confirm liability and damage coverage, deductibles and exclusions before you pick up the keys
A vacation rental and a loaner after a crash get talked about as if they were the same product. They are not. One question is whether your policy will pay for a substitute car while yours is in the shop. The other is whether that same policy will protect you, and the rental company, if something happens to a car you booked yourself.
What people on X are saying
The public advice is confident, and it is not all about the same coverage.
@KimballCruz0808 said they use Turo, always decline the rental company's insurance, and that their own insurer told them they did not need to buy it. That is one company's answer to one customer, including on a peer-to-peer platform, not a rule you can copy. @skrondog82 said their insurance contact told them never to buy the rental-car extra and asked other people to check their own policies. @t1jediabetic said they do have rental-car coverage through their auto policy and still expected a headache if they had to use it. @CHIBear20 described a breakdown on a trip and said the warranty would handle the repair, but that the rental coverage on their auto policy did not cover a mechanical breakdown or the extra hotel days.
Those posts are useful as a warning to ask a precise question. They are not permission to decline every counter product without checking.
If your own car is in the shop after a crash or a theft, the coverage that may pay for a substitute car is explained in Does Car Insurance Cover a Rental Car After an Accident?. Damage while you are already driving a rented car is covered in Rental Car Accident: Who Pays?.
Two different "rental" coverages
The Texas Department of Insurance answers the vacation question directly: if you have auto insurance, call your agent to see what it covers when you drive a rental car. TDI says policies differ, but that some cover damage to the rental car from a wreck or theft.
The North Carolina Department of Insurance says that under certain conditions your automobile policy may provide coverage while you use a rental vehicle, and that you should contact your agent for the specifics. North Carolina does not publish a blanket yes.
That is different from rental reimbursement. On the same TDI FAQ page, TDI says rental reimbursement pays for a rental if your own car was stolen or is being repaired because of an accident your policy covers. Some policies also pay for a taxi or a ride-hail trip. That benefit does not automatically repair a car you rented for a trip, and it does not automatically pay hotel bills after a breakdown.
The Insurance Information Institute describes collision as paying for damage to your car from a crash or from hitting an object, and comprehensive as paying for theft and for damage from things other than a collision, including fire, hail, flood and vandalism. Whether those parts of your policy extend to a vehicle you rent is a policy question, not something you can read off a generic coverage list.
If you cause a crash in a car you do not own, the liability question is close to the one in Accident in a Borrowed Car: Who Pays?. A breakdown that ends with a tow is a still different bill, closer to Towing and Storage Fees After a Car Accident.
| Situation | What to ask your insurer | What the counter product is usually about |
|---|---|---|
| You rent from a traditional company | Does my liability follow me, and does collision or comprehensive extend to the rental? | Damage to the rental company's car, and sometimes extra liability |
| You book a peer-to-peer car | Does this policy cover that platform, or is there an exclusion? | The host's or platform's protection plan |
| Your own car is in the shop after a claim | Do I have rental reimbursement, what is the daily limit, and when does it start? | Not the same coverage as a vacation rental |
| The rental breaks down | Does any auto coverage pay for a mechanical failure or extra lodging? | Often neither your collision coverage nor rental reimbursement |
What to do before you pick up the car
- Call or email your insurer and name the rental company or platform, the dates and the state where you will drive.
- Ask separately about liability if you hurt someone, about damage to the rented car, and about theft of the rented car.
- Ask whether any deductible on your policy would apply to a rented vehicle.
- Ask whether peer-to-peer or car-sharing platforms are excluded. Do not assume a yes about Hertz applies to Turo.
- Ask whether rental reimbursement on your policy would do anything on this trip. Often it will not, because your own car is not laid up by a claim.
- Compare that written answer with the rental company's damage waiver and with any credit-card benefit, including whether the card benefit is secondary.
- Keep the email or chat transcript with your reservation.
:::template Subject: Does my auto policy cover a rental car I am about to book?
Hello,
I am booking a rental car and I want to know, in writing, what my personal auto policy covers while I drive that vehicle.
Please tell me whether liability coverage follows me, whether collision or comprehensive extends to the rental, what deductible would apply, and whether any exclusion applies to this rental company or to a peer-to-peer platform. The pickup dates and location are below.
Thank you. :::
Edge cases and common mistakes
Do not treat "my insurance guy said never buy it" as your policy. TDI and the North Carolina department both tell you to ask, because policies differ.
Do not confuse a breakdown with a crash. One public post said the rental coverage on an auto policy did not pay for a mechanical failure.
Do not assume a credit card replaces a conversation with the insurer. Card benefits often wait behind your auto policy and have their own exclusions.

If you want someone to read the rental-related lines on your declarations page before a trip, a licensed agent can do that with you.
FAQ
Does my car insurance cover a rental car I booked?
It might. TDI says some policies cover damage to a rental from a wreck or theft, and that you should call your agent because policies differ. North Carolina says coverage may apply under certain conditions.
Is that the same as rental reimbursement?
No. Rental reimbursement is the optional coverage that may pay for a substitute car while your own insured car is stolen or being repaired after a covered loss.
Should I decline the extra coverage at the rental desk?
Only after you know what your own policy and any card benefit actually cover, including deductibles and exclusions. A general "never buy it" tip is not a review of your form.
Does a personal policy cover Turo or another peer-to-peer car?
Not necessarily. Ask about that platform by name. One person on X said their insurer told them they could decline Turo's product. That answer applied to their policy, not to every policy.
What if I cause a crash in the rental?
Liability coverage on a personal auto policy is designed to pay others if you are responsible for injuries or property damage. Whether it follows you into a rental is still a question for your insurer.
What if the rental is stolen or damaged in a parking lot?
That is usually a comprehensive-style loss if the policy extends to the rental. Confirm it before you need it.
Will rental coverage on my auto policy pay for a breakdown?
Do not count on it. Collision and comprehensive are not mechanical-breakdown insurance, and one public post said the rental coverage on a personal policy did not cover a breakdown.
What if I already booked the extra at the counter?
You can still ask your insurer what the personal policy would have done. The counter contract controls what you bought from the rental company.
